GB3OA uses EchoIRLP, so is capable of making or receiving calls
on either the EchoLink or IRLP system. For details of what each system
is, please refer to their respective web sites, either
here for IRLP or
here for Echolink. GB3OA's
IRLP and Echolink node numbers are the same, 5302.
Before using the gateway please ensure that no one is already using
the repeater, it's kind of obvious, but you'd be surprised sometimes :-)
If you wish to make a call over the IRLP network, simply announce
your callsign, and, using DTMF, key the 4 digit node number of your
required destination. Once the call has established, please wait a
further few seconds to ensure that the frequency is clear at the remote
end before making a call. After your contact, you can disconnect by
keying 73 on your keypad.
For Echolink, the procedure is just the same, only add a "hash"
character before the required Echolink node number. For example, to call
GB3DX (Echolink node number 7125), you would key #7125. It's that
simple.
Remember that this isn't like any normal DX connection, treat it
similar to a local VHF/UHF call. It should be as clear as using a
telephone, but allow a 1-2 second delay while the internet link is made
after you key the ptt up. So, to the key points...
LISTEN!
to
the repeater to check that it really is
free. If you're really wanting to find out quickly, you can key a "*3",
to find out if the linking facility is free or
not.
USE
YOUR CALLSIGN! Don't just blast away with
DTMF, it's intensely irritating for others listening to the repeater.
Announce your callsign and your intention, then dial.
WAIT! Make sure that once you're connected
you wait at least 15 seconds before calling. If you don't, you'll likely
crash over an existing QSO talking place at the remote of of the
connection.
THINK!
When using internet linking, it's
essential that you leave long pauses between overs, and key up for at
least a second before talking.
ENJOY!
It's there to be used, so enjoy it, but
remember to be courteous to other users.
There are some excellent
guideline available at
http://www.irlp.net/guidelines.html, take time to read them,
you'll be glad you did. |
